Why I Write

Searching for the truth in life, I seek quotes from other writers, philosophers, and notables. Their reflections can be impactful and a window into the souls of “truth seekers.” Some passages make me go “um,” but others jump out and make me shout, YES!! I hear you, and your viewpoint is indeed what’s in my heart; your observation expresses emotion in a way I hadn’t previously thought.

John Cheever’s quote sums up why I write and aptly speaks to me:

“The need to write comes from the need to make sense of one’s life and discover one’s usefulness.”

When I started writing about my cancer journey 10 years ago, it was my way of making sense of the chaos of Cancer. It was also a cathartic exercise and a vehicle to connect and express what others are thinking, but don’t know exactly how to explain.

In Covid-19 times, I’m searching, more than ever, to make sense of this “new” landscape we are negotiating and, for me, why I must be a witness to this evolution.

After surviving Colon and Breast Cancer, I thought that nothing else could rock my world again. Amidst the surgeries, radiation, and chemotherapy treatments, I faced my fears, grew in my faith, and embraced the blessings of love from my family and friends. Maybe that’s why today, I find myself still freaking out from all the pain and death we’ve experienced these past couple of years. Living in a real dystopian world is a plotline I could never have imagined coming true.

In my daily struggle to comprehend our world today, John Cheever’s quote is like a glaring neon spotlight focusing on why I write and why his observation still speaks to my soul:

“The need to write comes from the need to make sense of one’s life and discover one’s usefulness.”

Rise!

“You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it.”
– Maya Angelou

This quote by the late, inspirational Maya Angelou touches me because I subscribe to this attitude of rising from whatever challenges come before us.

My fight with cancer proved an opportunity to find out who I am and what I can rise above.

During my journey the more I shared my thoughts and feelings the more my heart was warmed and my spirit lifted by messages of encouragement and support. As I went through treatment I often expressed to friends and family that God loves me so much he gave me an opportunity to evolve; go to the next level on my life journey.

Being a cancer survivor I feel more empowered and determined to come out on the other side of whatever obstacles come my way with hands in the air celebrating victory!

Inspiration for Pain of the Soul

The sad and shocking news of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain taking their lives last week reminds me that we don’t know another’s pain; no matter how blessed we believe they are.

Their tragic deaths also triggered reflection on all the pain and sadness enveloping our country in reaction to unrelenting and overwhelming hate not only here but around the world. Alcohol and drug abuse serve to mask or deal with the incredible despair people experience daily. And, for some, suicide as the final resolution.

Our world is crying out in pain.

As an Advocate for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, friends watching my dedication to making a better world often check in and remind me to get a massage or stay away from the madness for 24 hours; being an activist is a tremendous weight and source of stress. “You see and deal with it every day; don’t forget to take care of you.”

Wise words indeed! Thanks, for the love.💗💜

I’m blessed with an incredible circle of friends and family but, that doesn’t make me immune to sadness or grief. The reality is countless people feel misunderstood and judged on how they deal with their circumstances and emotions. I don’t believe the pain in an individual’s soul can be explained; merely embraced with love and support.

Today, I pray we can all embrace our “humanness” with compassion, understanding our shared struggle in this complicated journey called life.

In times like these, a mantra I embrace is that attitude is everything. Living a conscious life with intention and purpose. In the words of Buddha:

Collectively we have the ability to create the world we wish to live in. What we visualize, we internalize and what we internalize dictates what we realize.

“You have within you right now, everything you need to deal with whatever

the world can throw at you.”

Belief in the Power of You 💓

Feeling inspired by a message of Hope, Belief, and Love I put together this video filled with some of my favorite Believe quotes. Hopefully, it will move and empower you to have faith in yourself and your dreams.

Believing in yourself is where it all starts. Waking up in the morning feeling blessed and sure that something wonderful is going to happen. The mind is incredibly powerful and shapes the life we live and the world we understand.

A mantra that I embrace is that attitude is everything. Living a conscious life with intention and purpose. We reap what we believe. We all have the ability to create the world we wish to live in. What you visualize, you internalize and what you internalize dictates what you realize.

The Wisdom of Dr. Seuss

I believe in thinking outside the box and creating my own reality so Dr. Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel) definitely speaks to me. I’m not sure if it’s because I just posted “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” on my other blog iheartfilmblog.com, but the wisdom of Dr. Seuss feels like a practical way of living life.

One of the most incredible aspects of my cancer treatment has been the remarkable healthcare professionals I’ve encountered. From day one, I’ve felt that my care and success has been in the forefront of my doctors and support professionals minds. The thing they all have in common, a Dr. Seuss philosophy of approaching my journey with a positive attitude and a belief in enjoying each and every day.

Having just watched “The Grinch” I’m reminded that our attitude affects every aspect and quality of our lives. How it plays out depends on you.

God has been holding my hand from day one and the superior care and uplifting in prayers and love from family and friends have helped give me the wings to be fearless in my fight against cancer. And as Dr. Seuss would say, “You’re off to great places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, so… be on your way!”

Thank you, Dr. Seuss, for the inspiration and dedication to making life fun and purposeful!

From the beginning, I announced and claimed to the universe that in my fight against Colon and Breast Cancer I wouldn’t have any major side effects and that although this battle is a challenge, it is also an opportunity to learn about my true self, grow in my faith, and share my blessed journey.

Before being diagnosed with Colon and Breast Cancer, I understood the devastation of this disease because I lost my mom to Colon Cancer.

A conversation with my husband a couple of days ago about top ten westerns somehow led to actress Elizabeth Montgomery. (Star of  1960’s TV show “Bewitched”) Now, I find myself reflecting that some of my favorite actresses (Gilda Radner and Madeline Kahn to name just 2) succumbed to cancer. The spotlight gave them the opportunity to create awareness and be real about their story.

I have a friend who lost his wife a couple of years ago tell me recently I inspire him. I felt so humbled by his statement, especially in light of his personal heartbreak.

I’m not a celebrity, but I do feel passionate about relating my cancer experiences through my writings because I want to use my journey as a way to give back and maybe inspire someone else reading my posts to have faith and believe in their own power to create a beautiful life.
